More About Josh Morrison
On February 2, 2013, 12-year-old Josh Morrison was in the Uxbridge ReStore and noticed a penny drive to collect 10 000 000 (10 million) pennies ($100 000) to build a townhouse in Oshawa for a low-income family. Immediately Josh felt a calling to help out. On February 4th, 2013, Josh initiated a penny drive in his school in Uxbridge, Ontario and they collected over 20,000 pennies within the first couple months. Josh made it his goal to help raise $100,000 by the end of 2016 to build a house for a Habitat family at CentreTowne – Oshawa.
In order to meet his goal by the end of 2016, Josh needs the help of all students and community members in Durham. Currently, public schools in Uxbridge and Stouffville are participating, businesses and restaurants in Uxbridge and Port Perry have collection tins beside their cash registers. Josh has spoken at the Uxbridge’s Chamber of Commerce and several clubs and churches have supported the campaign as well. He also continues to bring his campaign to various community events. Such as Oshawa, Uxbridge and Port Perry’s Santa Claus Parades with Habitat Durham. Local media have covered Josh’s story including a story in the Uxbridge Cosmos newspaper which was picked up by Metroland, which then moved the information to all of Durham and resulted in a spot on Global TV. Further promotion led to CBC TV and Durham Radio. CHEX TV12 interviewed Josh for their viewers, and Sun Media printed a short piece about Josh. In January 2015 it was announced that Josh was a recipient of the 2014 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award.
Josh knows pennies are getting harder to find, thus he has changed his focus “any coins, or even bills, are OK.
Thank you for helping Josh to reach his goal – one penny at a time!
